Thoroughbred horses have been bred for centuries for their remarkable athleticism, intelligence, and heart. Though known by most people for their prowess as racehorses, Thoroughbreds excel in eventing, dressage, hunter/jumper competitions, steeplechasing and foxhunting. It is the mission of SummerWind Farm to re-train Thoroughbreds who have finished their careers on the track in one or more of those disciplines, have them establish a competition record, then sell them to good homes.
Using contacts in the horseracing community and throughout the Thoroughbred community, SummerWind Farm acquires horses right from the track or farm and trains them on site. Our trainer/rider is Aubrey Dunkerton, an accomplished eventer. Aubrey creates an individual program for each new “student” horse, bringing him along according to age, background and talent level.
All the horses at SummerWind Farm are allowed to “be horses” as much as possible. They are turned out in large pastures of lush bermuda and clover grasses for a minimum of 12 hours a day with at least one other horse. When not getting ready to go to a competition, the Farm’s horses are often “hairy, dirty and happy.”
Each horse is introduced to the competition world at his own pace. When he has established a respectable competition record, he is offered for sale to a good home through a variety of channels. The philosophy of SummerWind Farm is to present our horses for sale in an accurate and complete manner, with the goal of making sure that each horse is well-matched with his new owner/rider and will be happy and successful with that owner for many years into the future.
